35 in black book shelf4/24/2024 For these highly customizable furnishings, designers of the day delivered an alternative to big, heavy bookcases by considering the use of space - and, in particular, walls - in new and innovative ways. Mid-century modern furniture enthusiasts will cite the tall modular wall units crafted in teak and other sought-after woods of the era by the likes of George Nelson, Poul Cadovius and Finn Juhl. In the mid-19th century, cabinetmakers would mimic styles originating in the Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI eras for their dressers, bookshelves and other structures, and, later, simpler, streamlined wood designs allowed these “case pieces” or “case goods” - any furnishing that is unupholstered and has some semblance of a storage component - to blend into the background of any interior. Do yourself a favor, buy properly designed furniture, not this garbage.Of all the antique and vintage case pieces and storage cabinets that have become popular in modern interiors over the years, dressers, credenzas and cabinets have long been home staples, perfect for routine storage or protection of personal items. The sad Ziggy inspired instruction manual is the sad prologue to yet another saga of me kicking myself in the buttocks. And, I'll have to say that I've ended up hating every piece of furniture that is bought from Ikea. THEN, shelves start to fall and its time to try to put Humpty Dumpty back together, rinse and repeat. As you load the shelves with books, the sides start to bow outward thus releasing the backerboard from its non-existant shackles. They felt they could defy physics by using a notch that the backerboard would happily stay inserted into with no assistance (other than luck). The pathetic architects felt that a piece of really thick backerboard (think really thick cardboard) would provide structural integrity to the rectangular frame. And, every time we move it, it is a frustrating nightmare (currently 3am in the morning dealing.). Unstable and Frustrating Lawrence I've had this bookshelf for 3 years. we ended up paying over 50 in additional hardware. The wall bolts to make these 'safe' are also not functional as the screws are too short to even pass the drywall, let alone meet and be drilled into a stud. We were regular Ikea customers until the pandemic and coming back after, it seems Ikea has taken the same route as other companies: raise the prices and drop the quality. We had to purchase L brackets to stabilize these or they just collapse on themselves. The screws do not go in straight as the holes are not drilled straight, either. Our first her wrench snapped in half with zero force applied, and one of the her lock bolts also snapped in half. The solid wood of this collection has drastically dropped in quality, as has the hardware included. All around, these are poor products for the price. We finally ordered our two and when they arrived, we immediately noticed the weight of the wood was much lighter than on previous models. Not so great Jessica We looked at these in 2019 and wanted them badly.
